Q: Building beautiful homes is your superpower and something for which you’ve earned a reputation as being the best of the best. What is your secret?
A: For me, building a home is all about balance and making sure the proportions are sized accurately to suit the house. In my mind it’s like a puzzle. All the pieces must fit just perfectly. Then, of course, beautiful and expert craftsmanship brings the aesthetics to life. When you walk into a home, you should get a good feeling from the space and flow of energy.
Q: Tell us about an unusual situation that you had to overcome to finish a project?
A: Early in my career, my first big project involved building a 17,000-square-foot guesthouse, complete with a tennis court and playhouse surrounded by a man-made pond and bridge for access. It was a fairytale-like concept, but I was up for the challenge. We had to get creative and bring in scuba gear to work underwater and make sure everything was foundationally secure. We also had to break in the tennis court surface to get it client-ready. Tennis and scuba diving aren’t typical requirements in my profession, but in this case, they were surprising perks to the job.
Q: What advice would you offer someone starting out in your profession?
A: A strong and competitive work ethic has always been in my blood. I’ve always strived to be better than the next guy and I’ve used that drive to propel my career and it has paid off. Like with most professions, building a home at the scale that we do is a team effort and involves partnerships built on trust. We have a team of architects, designers, subcontractors, and many other skilled craftsmen who all bring their own talent to the table. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the most talented craftsman from all over the world. Everyone depends on each other to present their best work and create something enduringly beautiful and seamlessly functional.
