Miami City Ballet’s 40th Anniversary Season promises a breathtaking tribute to four decades of artistry, passion, and innovation. Each performance is a masterfully curated experience, blending the timeless elegance of classical ballet with the bold, contemporary energy that defines Miami. From spellbinding world premieres to beloved classics, this milestone season is more than a celebration—it’s an invitation to witness history in motion. With every grand jeté and every delicate port de bras, MCB’s extraordinary dancers bring to life a repertoire that captivates, inspires, and leaves audiences spellbound.
The season opens spectacularly with Don Quixote, a high-energy ballet infused with romance, adventure, and Spanish flair. Making its triumphant return after more than a decade, this lavish production bursts onto the stage with fiery choreography, opulent costumes, and an irresistibly festive score. The grandeur continues with George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker, a cherished holiday tradition transforming South Florida into a winter wonderland. Featuring a full live orchestra and a cast of over 100 dancers, this dazzling spectacle enchants audiences with its timeless magic and immersive pre-show experience, setting the stage for unforgettable holiday memories.
As the season unfolds, Into the Magic City pays homage to Miami’s vibrant artistic pulse with a striking Winter Mix program. Ulysses Dove’s Red Angels electrifies the senses with razor-sharp athleticism and an entrancing electric violin score, while Balanchine’s The Unanswered Question casts an ethereal spell with its hypnotic beauty. The highly anticipated world premiere by Alexei Ratmansky further elevates the program, honoring MCB’s visionary roots while propelling ballet into an exhilarating future. Spring brings Your Perfect Golden Hour, an elegant fusion of past and present, where Jerome Robbins’ stripped-down masterpiece, Moves, meets fresh, jazz-infused creations by Durante Verzola and Stephanie Martinez, culminating in Paul Taylor’s inventive Cloven Kingdom.
The grand finale, ¡Vamos! To the Beach, radiates with the energy and spirit of Miami. A striking reimagination of Balanchine’s Apollo Without Birth distills ballet to its essence, while a bold world premiere by Lauren Lovette, set to Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts, epitomizes artistic evolution. Twyla Tharp’s Deuce Coupe closes the season on a high, merging ballet with The Beach Boys’ sun-soaked anthems in an electrifying crescendo of movement and music. As the curtain falls on this landmark 40th season, MCB’s legacy shines brighter than ever—a celebration of tradition, transformation, and the unyielding power of dance.
